<image:title>Journal - hindsight is 2020 - Finding My Rhythm Dance enabled me to physically release the churning cauldron of confusion, chaos, anger, frustration, sadness, worry, joy and all the other emotions that passed through me during the spring of 2020.</image:title>
<image:caption>Gaga is an Israeli method of free form dance that served as the perfect accomplice to begin my aimless days. When I danced, I shed the layers of myself that cared what people thought. I wasn’t trying to be anyone special when I danced. I wasn’t trying, period. I was just a body releasing truths as they passed through. I wildly thrashed my limbs and made ugly faces and sweat and cried and laughed and released all the unidentifiable, unlableable things I was feeling inside that need to be released. I reminded myself of a baby, unfiltered shifts in facial expression and whole-body motion from one moment to the next as the music moved me. I was in a process of unlearning the rhythms I’d adopted to accommodate the world and people around me and becoming more attuned to my own true rhythm.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Journal - hindsight is 2020 - Baking for Comfort</image:title>
<image:caption>I started baking challah on Fridays and it quickly became a beloved ritual. People all over the country started baking. I know this because, for a while, yeast was as rare as gold. Here are all the things I fell in love with: the anticipatory purchasing of yeast and flour at the Russian market near my boyfriend’s house… the mental challenges of science and experimentation… the pleasure of sending flour flying across the floor as I buried my hands in dough… a soulful connection to my mother and a lineage of Jewish women reaching back through space and time… the tantalizing scent of baking bread… the blessing of gratitude precipitating that luscious first bite of steaming challah dipped in salt… embarking on a path of mastery (with a long way to go). Baking Challah has become my favorite way to shift gears and separate the week from the weekend. I’m excited to continue learning, practicing and enjoying this delicious tradition.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - hindsight is 2020 - Popop’s funeral would be the last time I would physically embrace my family for a long time to come (still waiting). I had loved holding Popop’s hand. Prior to his death, I’d found peace in holding his hand, looking into his kind, brown eyes and kissing his face. That face is gone now forever, save for precious photos and memories. Annica. I sat next to Granny and held her hand through the funeral service. I had no idea I wouldn’t be able to hold her hand from that point forward; even today, a year later, I can’t hold my Granny’s hand to comfort and love her through her loss. This has been one of the most heartbreaking things about 2020.</image:title>

      <image:title>Journal - hindsight is 2020 - Confronting Racial Injustice</image:title>
<image:caption>When George Floyd died, America broke open. The news hummed with a constant stream of horrors predicated on truths we’ve been refusing to face for hundreds of years. When I joined thousands of other San Franciscans on Golden Gate Bridge for a Black Lives Matter protest to resist police brutality and racial inequality, I felt a surge of purpose and connection that set my spirit on fire. I started going to rallies all over the city, devoured books by contemporary and legendary Black writers, engaged in transformative conversations with my family, and turned the mirror inwards to examine all the ways in which I’ve internalized white supremacy, patriarchy and other systems of oppression. My heart ached and my soul shook. My lifelong commitment to confronting difficult truths, learning empathically, and taking action to uplift humanity will never be the same after the transformative summer of our discontent. How have you been transformed by this time of reckoning?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Journal - hindsight is 2020 - Finding Family With Frida</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve always wanted a dog, but because I tend to travel like a maniac, it never felt like a reasonable or humane decision to get one. COVID changed all that, of course. My dream dog was an Australian Shepherd. When I found a listing on Craigslist for a litter of Aussie puppies on a farm in the Central Coast of California, I drove down to check it out. Delightedly overwhelmed by a cute explosion of rambunctious pups, I was most drawn to the calm little baby girl who sat quietly by my side as the others tumbled and nipped and barked. I named her Frida, in honor of one of the most talented, radical artists in history, Frida Kahlo, and I joined the countless others who found solace in COVID puppies when I brought her home a few weeks later, on November 1. My experience of raising a puppy has involved sleepless nights, steep learning curves, and infinite patience, but it feels so good to love and care for another creature my heart could burst. I’ve started my very own family and I can’t wait to see how it grows from here. This is a photo of me and Frida hiking in Joshua Tree National Park on January 2, 2021. I feel a spark of joy igniting my life and spreading light in new directions.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Journal - hindsight is 2020 - Once upon a time, during a time of abundance and merriment…</image:title>
<image:caption>I woke up on January 1, 2020 with my partner and we went to brunch. Both of those things - a relationship that felt like it was going somewhere and the ability to enjoy a meal in a boisterous, carefree establishment - were things I felt entitled to then. They’re both behind me now. The intention I set for 2020 was to focus less on doing (activity, productivity, making things happen) and more on being (presence, listening, receptivity). When I set that intention, I had no idea how fiercely I would be confronted with the opportunity to live it in the year to come. When the year began, my biggest challenge was a compulsive need to always know what was coming next, which expressed itself through an addiction to planning and scheduling. It would be a matter of weeks before that challenge became obsolete and even laughable, as deeper challenges presented themselves to us all.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Journal - hindsight is 2020 - Grieving in Golden Gate</image:title>
<image:caption>Golden Gate Park became my new best friend during the early days of shelter-in-place. I went on countless runs, walks, bike rides, and on nice days I just sat in one meadow or another to absorb the sunshine, take in the beautiful views and welcome a sense of beauty, wonder and connection to nature. I was incredibly grateful to live near such an epic place. This is a photo of the National AIDS Memorial Grove, my favorite place in Golden Gate Park. I love visiting this spot and sitting on the cold stones, feeling hugged by regal redwoods as I watch sunlight stream through branches. The air is always impossibly fresh here, often carrying a hint of Pacific Ocean air. During my visits, I’d read the names of people who perished during the AIDS epidemic carved into the stones and hope they didn’t die alone. As I sensed their spirits around me, I’d think of all the people currently dying of COVID, and my heart would break. Through my loneliness, I felt a sense of belonging when I tapped into our collective grief.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Journal - hindsight is 2020 - Up in Smoke</image:title>
<image:caption>When I awoke to an eerie, supernaturally orange sky on September 9, 2020, it felt like a pile of charred rocks settled in my stomach. I’d moved to to a sweet little house in Oakland a month prior and had found it deliciously hygge when a rare thunderstorm hit on my first morning. The endless weeks of raging wildfires that ensued devastated Californians and jolted me into a new, heightened state of anxiety.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Journal - hindsight is 2020 - The Inner Earthquake</image:title>
<image:caption>As we’ve seen, 2020 had a way of revealing troubling realities and accelerating corrective actions. My relationship was not exempt from this, though I’d made a noble attempt to reframe all the signs that my partner and I were simply incompatible. I started the year thinking I’d finally met the man of my dreams; ironically, our breakup commenced on the 4th of July — Independence Day. As I transitioned from the comfort of being coupled to a vulnerable state of singledom in an increasingly isolated world, like fractures along a fault line, a paradigm started to shift within me. Why did not having a partner make me feel like such a failure? I realized I was living my life in fear of becoming a sad spinster archetype, and that I was tired to death of that whole bullshit story. Catalyzed by the interruption of social order that was shaking the nation, my inner narrative that “single = inferior” also began to crumble. This has led to a new, more curious relationship with myself and what kind of life would fulfill me, whether or not it follows the typical “road map.”</image:caption>
